Common questions

Can you paint over mould?
Never paint directly over mould, it will grow back through the new paint. Proper mould treatment and painting starts with killing the mould with a specialist treatment, sealing the surface with a mould-inhibiting primer, then topcoating with a mould-resistant paint.
What causes mould on interior walls?
Mould thrives in damp, poorly ventilated areas. Common causes include inadequate ventilation in bathrooms and laundries, condensation on cold walls, leaking pipes and poor drainage around the home. Addressing the moisture source is essential before any mould painting work begins.
What paint prevents mould?
We use Dulux premium bathroom paint and specialist anti-mould coatings that contain mould inhibitors. These products resist mould growth and are designed for high-moisture environments.
Will the mould come back after painting?
If the moisture source is addressed and we use the correct treatment and products, the mould should not return. We always recommend improving ventilation and fixing any leaks as part of the solution.
Can mould on walls affect your health?
Mould spores irritate the respiratory system and can aggravate asthma and allergies, particularly in children and older adults. This is why we treat mould properly rather than painting over it. Once we have killed and sealed the mould and you improve the ventilation, the air quality improves along with the appearance.
Does mould treatment work on bathroom ceilings?
Yes, and bathrooms are one of the most common places we treat. The process is the same: kill the mould with a specialist wash, allow it to dry fully, prime with a mould-inhibiting primer and topcoat with a Dulux paint formulated for high humidity. Without fixing the ventilation, though, mould will return regardless of the products used.
How do you know if a wall has mould behind it versus just on the surface?
Surface mould is usually visible as patches of black, green or grey growth that sit on the paint film. Deep or structural mould can be indicated by persistent musty odour, paint that keeps blistering back in the same spot, or visible moisture tracking. Where we suspect moisture is getting in from behind, we recommend investigating that before painting so the repair lasts.
Will painting over mould void the paint warranty?
It would if we just painted over it, but we do not. We kill the mould, prime with compatible products and topcoat as specified. Our workmanship warranty covers the job as completed, and using the correct preparation sequence means the manufacturer's product warranty on the Dulux coatings remains valid.
