What we do next depends on what the house is made of. Weatherboard needs the most work: wash, scrape, sand, restore rotten boards and spot-prime every bare face. Render and masonry need less timber work but need hairline cracks bridged and chalky residue washed back to something sound. Work out the substrate
Weatherboard, render and brick each need a different amount of work, so the first job is establishing what you have and what has already failed on it.

Wash back to something sound
Pressure wash, scrape the loose, sand the edges, bridge hairline cracks and take chalky residue off render. Preparation is 60 to 70 percent of the labour.

Spot-prime, then two coats
Every bare face is primed before topcoats. Melbourne swings 20 degrees between lunchtime and dinner, and an unprimed face is the first thing to open up.
