So we sand back the grey weathered fibre, clean it, and give it the dry time it needs before checking moisture and starting. Oil soaks in and wears gradually, which suits a deck you will recoat every couple of years; a film-forming paint looks sharper but peels once it lets go, so the choice depends on how you want to maintain it.
