Painting aluminium and timber window frames

Aluminium and timber are two different jobs. Aluminium is the one people get wrong: paint straight onto the factory finish and it peels off in sheets within a season, so it needs a de-gloss and an etch primer before anything else. Timber sashes fail at the putty line and the bottom rail, where water sits, so failed putty gets raked out and replaced rather than painted over. Sashes are cut free and the beads eased so the window still opens when we leave.

Our window frame painting process

  1. 01

    Split aluminium from timber

They are two different jobs. Aluminium takes a de-gloss and an etch primer, or the paint peels off the factory finish in sheets within a season.

  2. 02

    Rake out failed putty

Timber sashes fail at the putty line and the bottom rail where water sits, so failed putty is raked out and replaced instead of painted over.

  3. 03

    Cut the sashes free

Frames and sashes are coated, then the beads are eased and the sashes cut free, so every window still opens when we leave.

Window frame painting questions

Can you paint timber sash windows?
Yes, sash windows are our specialty. We paint both the inner and outer sashes, the frame, parting beads and sills. We ensure the windows still operate smoothly after painting.
How do you stop paint getting on the glass?
We use a combination of careful brushwork and scraping. A thin paint seal onto the glass edge actually helps with weatherproofing, but we clean up any excess for a neat finish.
Can you paint aluminium window frames?
Yes. Aluminium frames can be painted using specialist primers and coatings designed for metal surfaces. This is a great way to update the look without replacing the windows.
