Colour Consulting for Melbourne Homes

Colour consulting doesn't have to be overwhelming. We help you choose colours that work in your home, considering natural light, room size and how colours interact in your space.

How Melbourne's light decides which colours actually work

Room orientation is the factor most homeowners underestimate. A south-facing Melbourne room gets cool, indirect light all day. Cool-undertone colours, blue-greys and cool whites, can read cold and flat there even when they look balanced on a shop swatch. Warmer creams and greige tones sit more neutrally in south rooms.

North and west rooms get direct afternoon sun that shifts colour temperature through the day. A colour that looks right at breakfast can read orange-washed by 4pm. A large painted sample board left in the room across a full day, and under your evening lights, tells you what a small chip cannot.

Undertones quietly drive whether combinations work. A wall with a green undertone fights a floor with a red-orange undertone even when each looks neutral alone. Holding the colour against your floor, cabinetry and any stone before committing shows whether the undertones agree.

Common questions

Do you offer colour consulting?
Yes. We provide colour consulting as part of our painting service. We help you choose colours that suit your home, your style and the natural light in each room, drawing on more than three decades of experience.
How does colour consulting work?
We visit your home and consider the natural light, the size of each space, your furniture and decor, and the mood you want to create. We bring sample pots and large colour swatches to help you see how colours will look in your actual space.
What are the most popular interior colours in Melbourne?
Neutral whites and warm greys continue to dominate. Dulux White on White, Lexicon Quarter and Natural White are consistently popular. We are seeing more homeowners choosing soft greens, sage and warm earthy tones for feature walls.
Can you match a colour I have seen online or in a magazine?
In most cases, yes. We use Dulux colour-matching technology to match colours from samples, photos or references. We can usually achieve an exact or very close match.
How do you choose the right white for walls and ceilings?
White is rarely straightforward because there are warm whites, cool whites and everything in between. We look at the room's light direction, the floor and joinery tones, and what you want the room to feel like. A warm white on a south-facing wall reads as neutral; a cool white in the same room can feel harsh. We bring sample pots and large swatch cards to test in your actual space.
Should the trim colour match the ceiling or the walls?
It depends on the effect you want. Matching the trim to the ceiling in the same white reads clean and contemporary, making the room feel taller. Choosing a slightly warmer or darker tone for the trim picks out the architraves and skirtings as architectural detail. We will show you both options on your walls before you decide.
Can you advise on exterior colour schemes as well as interiors?
Yes. Exterior colour consulting follows different logic, you are working with a fixed relationship between roof colour, brickwork or render, and any timber or metal elements. We look at what you have on the facade and suggest combinations that work with those fixed elements rather than against them.
How many sample colours should I test before deciding?
We usually recommend narrowing to two or three strong candidates and testing each as a large sample patch of at least an A3 size on the actual wall. Small chip cards are too small to judge in a room's light. Living with the patches for a day or two, including under evening lights, saves a lot of second-guessing after the job is done.
