Render Painting Melbourne

Render painting requires specialist coatings, whether cement, acrylic or textured render. We clean, repair cracks and apply breathable, flexible masonry coatings that last.

Render curing, alkalinity and why timing the paint matters

Fresh cement render is strongly alkaline when it sets, often above pH 12 for weeks. Painting too early causes saponification, where the alkali attacks the binder and the film softens and lets go from below. The rule of thumb is at least four weeks on new sand-and-cement render in dry weather, longer through winter when curing slows.

Hairline cracks are almost a given on Melbourne render because the substrate moves with heat and moisture. The fix is a flexible filler rather than a rigid one, finished with a masonry topcoat elastic enough to bridge small movement instead of cracking at the same points.

Breathability is the other key property. Render holding moisture from behind the wall needs a coating that lets vapour pass through rather than sealing it in and blistering. A fully sealing solvent-based coat is usually the wrong call on older rendered homes.

Common questions

Can you paint over cement render?

Yes. Cement render is an excellent substrate for render painting. We clean, repair any cracks, prime and apply specialist masonry coatings that adhere well and provide long-lasting colour and protection.

What paint is best for render painting?

We use premium Dulux masonry coatings. These are specifically designed for rendered surfaces, they are breathable, flexible and resist cracking as the render moves with temperature changes.

Can you fix cracks in render before painting?

Yes. We fill hairline cracks with flexible filler, repair larger cracks with render patch and prime all repairs before topcoating. The key is using a flexible coating system that moves with the substrate.

How long does render painting last in Melbourne?

With proper preparation and quality masonry coatings, render painting typically lasts eight to twelve years in Melbourne conditions. Exposed surfaces may need attention sooner.

Does render need to be primed before painting?

Yes, and the primer choice matters. New sand-and-cement render is strongly alkaline and needs an alkali-resistant masonry primer to stop the alkalinity attacking the topcoat binder. Older render that is sound but porous benefits from a sealer-primer first so the topcoat goes on evenly rather than soaking in faster on some patches.

Can you paint acrylic render the same way as cement render?

Not quite. Acrylic render is more flexible than cement render and has a smoother, denser surface. It still needs cleaning and a suitable primer, but the topcoat needs to be at least as flexible as the render beneath, otherwise you will get cracking along any movement lines. We choose the coating system to match the render type.

What causes render paint to blister or bubble?

Blistering usually means moisture is trapped under the coating. This happens when render is painted before it has fully cured, when a vapour-sealing product is used on a wall with ongoing dampness, or when a leak or rising damp is still active. The blisters need to be opened, the moisture source fixed and the area re-prepared before repainting.

Is render painting something you can quote without a site visit?

Not accurately, no. Render condition varies a lot, hairline cracking, spalling, salt bloom and moisture staining all affect the prep scope. We visit the site, assess the surface and provide a written itemised quote so you know exactly what is included before any work starts.
