Smoke Damaged Ceiling Painting Melbourne

Smoke stains bleed through ordinary paint. We clean the surface, apply specialist stain-blocking primers that seal both stains and odour, then topcoat for a clean, bright result.

Why smoke residue bleeds through standard paint and how to stop it

Smoke deposits are oily and acidic, and they dissolve in water and in the solvents in water-based paint. Roll a standard ceiling white over smoke-stained plaster and the moisture reactivates them, drawing the stain up through the wet film. Once dry the topcoat shows yellow-brown staining, and a second coat of white just repeats the process.

The right order is to clean the surface with a degreaser first, then seal it with a shellac or oil-based stain-blocking primer before any topcoat. These seal the residue into the plaster rather than dissolving it. Water-based stain-blockers handle light marks but are not reliable on heavy wood-fire or kitchen smoke.

The source changes the severity. Wood-heater soot, candle smoke and cigarette build-up leave different residues, and heavy cooking grease can look like smoke but needs a different degreaser before sealing. Identifying the source guides the prep.

Common questions

Can you restore a smoke damaged ceiling?
Yes, but proper preparation is essential. We clean the surface, apply a specialist stain-blocking primer that seals smoke damaged ceiling stains and odour, then topcoat with premium ceiling paint for a clean, bright finish.
Will smoke stains bleed through new paint?
Not if prepared correctly. We use a shellac-based or specialist stain-blocking primer that completely seals smoke and nicotine stains on a smoke damaged ceiling. Standard primer is not sufficient, the right product is critical.
Can you remove the smoke smell from ceilings?
Our stain-blocking primers encapsulate smoke residue and significantly reduce odour. For severe smoke damage, we may recommend an initial chemical wash before priming and painting.
How long does smoke damaged ceiling repair take?
It depends on the extent of the damage and the size of the area. A single room typically takes two to three days including cleaning, priming and two topcoats. Larger areas or severe smoke damaged ceiling work may take longer.
Does the type of smoke affect how you prepare the ceiling?
Yes. Cigarette and nicotine build-up is an oily, acidic residue that penetrates plaster and needs a heavy degreaser wash followed by a shellac or oil-based stain blocker. Kitchen grease smoke leaves a sticky film that requires a different degreaser first. Wood-fire or heater soot is finer and more porous. We identify the source and choose the wash and primer accordingly.
Can a smoke-stained ceiling be painted without replacing the plaster?
In most cases, yes. Unless the plaster is physically damaged, saturated or crumbling, we can clean, seal and repaint it. The key is the right primer, not more topcoats. Replacing plaster is usually not necessary unless there is structural damage behind the staining.
Do you need to repaint the whole ceiling or just the stained section?
For even colour and sheen, it is almost always better to do the whole ceiling. Spot-priming a stained patch and topcoating just that area often leaves a visible difference in sheen or texture against the original ceiling, especially under raking light. We will tell you honestly if a partial repair is likely to blend before we start.
Is your smoke ceiling work backed by a workmanship warranty?
Yes. We stand behind our workmanship on every project, including smoke-damaged ceiling restoration. If a stain bleeds back through due to preparation we carried out, we return and fix it at no cost. We use the right products the first time to make sure that does not happen.
