Painting doors, skirtings and architraves
Trim is where a repaint is judged, because it sits at eye level and at knee level and every brush mark shows. Doors get taken back with a de-gloss and a sand, dents filled, and the hardware removed rather than cut around. Old oil-based enamel is the catch: it has usually gone brittle and yellow, so it needs a proper key before a waterborne enamel will hold. Skirtings are cut in by hand against the floor and the wall, which is slow work and the reason trim is priced separately.

Our door & trim painting process

Take the hardware off
Handles, hinges and stops come off rather than get cut around, so each face can be sanded and coated as one surface.

De-gloss and key
Old oil-based enamel has usually gone brittle and yellow, so it takes a de-gloss and a sand to give the waterborne enamel something to hold. Dents are filled at the same time.

Cut in at the floor
Skirtings are cut in against the floor and the wall by hand. It is slow, it is why trim is priced separately, and it is what you see at knee level.
Door & trim painting questions
- What paint do you use on doors and trim?
- We use Dulux premium enamel in semi-gloss for most interior woodwork. It provides a smooth, hard-wearing finish that is easy to clean and resists yellowing over time.
- Can you paint over varnished wood?
- Yes. We sand and prime varnished doors, trim and other timber to create a key for the new paint. The result is a smooth, opaque finish that completely covers the old varnish.
- Do you paint both sides of doors?
- Yes, we paint both sides and all edges of every door as standard. This ensures even coverage and prevents moisture from penetrating unsealed timber.
